A Letter from the Bush Sisters to the Obama Girls

They wanted to say goodbye.
January 13, 2017

It’s finally time for Barack Obama to pack his bags and go back to his normal life. We are going to miss him, as well as his charismatic wife Michelle and his two lovely girls Malia and Sasha. We’re not the only ones who miss the first family; former president George Bush’s daughters Barbara and Jenna chose to write the Obama girls a moving letter to say goodbye. The letter was published in Time Magazine this Thursday.

“Malia and Sasha, eight years ago on a cold November day, we greeted you on the steps of the White House. We saw both the light and wariness in your eyes as you gazed at your new home” said the Bush sisters.

They proceeded by saying how much they appreciate Malia and Sasha’s participation in their parents’ social works and good deeds. “In eight years, you have done so much. Seen so much. You stood at the gates of the Robben Island cell where South Africa’s Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for decades, your arms around your father. You traveled to Liberia and Morocco with your mom to talk with girls about the importance of education. You attended state dinners, hiked in national parks, met international leaders and managed to laugh at your dad’s jokes during the annual Thanksgiving turkey pardon; all while being kids, attending school and making friends. We have watched you grow from girls to impressive young women with grace and ease. And through it all you had each other. Just like we did.”
