Grey’s Anatomy’s April Kepner opens up about Getting Fired
A few months ago, on the last episode of Grey’s Anatomy, the character of April Kepner said her goodbyes to Grey-Sloan Memorial Hospital, having quit to dedicate her time to her husband Matthew. The actress who plays Kepner, Sarah Drew, was actually fired by Shonda Rhymes. Producers refused to renew her contract for the next season, and it’s now that she decided to speak out.
In an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, Drew revealed for the first time her side of the story: “It was in the afternoon and I went back to my trailer and I did my crying and called my people,” she said. “A whole bunch of people came into my trailer to give me hugs and cry with me and tell me they were so sad I was leaving.” According to the actress, she was told that the TV show had too many characters and had to downsize the cast a bit.
Jessica Capshaw aka Arizona Robbins has also left the ABC drama this season for the same reason Drew did, but we have heard no word from her yet.
Even though Sarah Drew’s character had a happy ending marrying Matthew, Sarah reveals that it wasn’t the kind of ending she was hoping for. Apparently, she was rooting for Jackson to be Kepner’s Mr. Right! "Part of me will always be a little heartbroken that April and Jackson were not end game,” she said.
On the bright side, she has recently received an Emmy nomination for The B-Team, a Grey’s short series she directed. Let’s hope she wins, that’ll show them!
