The hip-hop star and American rapper Nicki Minaj have refused to participate in the Jeddah Music Festival in Saudi Arabia on July 18, citing her decision to support women's and gay rights.

"After careful reflection, I decided not to go ahead with my planned concert at the Jeddah International Festival," she said in a statement. "While I want nothing more than to bring my show to fans in Saudi Arabia, after better educating myself on the issues, I believe it is important for me to make clear my support for the rights of women, the LGBTQ community and freedom of expression.". "

Organizers of the festival expected the controversial singer to be at the forefront of the first edition of the festival, which will be broadcast worldwide.
