This Egyptian Singer sentenced to Six Months in Prison
Sherine Abdel Wahab is known for having a great sense of humor. Unfortunately, not everyone can tolerate it. A few months ago, the Egyptian singer had joked during a concert in the United Arab Emirates about the Nile river in Egypt, which despite her innocent intentions, was taken as an insult.
This is how it all went down: A fan asked the star to sing one of her songs "Mashrebtesh Men l Nil?" which means "did you drink the water of the Nile?". "You would get schistosomiasis," she joked, referring to a disease caused by parasitic worms found in some freshwaters. "Go for Evian water, it's better!" she said.
As a result, Abdel Wahab was sentenced on Tuesday February 27 to jail for a period of six months.
According to a judicial source, she received this sentence from a court in Cairo for "disseminating false information" and "disturbing public order". She's to pay a deposit of 5,000 Egyptian pounds.
Moreover, the Egyptian Music Syndicate announced that they'll ban the singer from performing on stage in Egypt. Sherine eventually apologized. What do you think about this whole thing?
